How to value your requirements management tool?

A number of recommendations should be followed to ensure that the implementation of a requirements management tool meets your expectations:

  • Training and monitoring of business analystes activities

While training is generally fairly rapid, support for business analysts is essential to guarantee the long-term construction of a quality repository.

  • Define quality objectives

It is essential to define the quality objectives to be achieved (compliance with best practices, standards, etc.) before making the tool available to your teams. Reproducing the errors and mistakes of poor-quality documentation produced with conventional office tools is of no interest to your organization.

  • Don’t turn your repository into a technical design tool

None of the technical and design-related (as opposed to functional) information has any place in a requirements management tool.

  • Explain the benefits to all teams

If your requirements management tool is indeed fed primarily by the project owner, it requires the collaboration of the other parties involved (technical designers, business, regulations) to guarantee its accuracy, clarity, completeness and adequacy with the needs expressed (via reviews and/or feedback on requirements).

  • Have the support of management

It’s not just a tool for the business analysts! Its use will impact all those involved in development projects. It’s essential that the organization’s management, or at least the IT department, be the driving force behind this project.
